Found a busted cooler leaking on the sand at Mission Beach and got into it with the guy who left it
Last Saturday at Mission Beach I found a cracked cooler with a broken handle half buried near the jetty, and a guy about 20 feet away said it was his and he was "coming back for it" even though it was leaking water and had a sandwich wrapper blowing out of it. I told him the tide was about to take it and I was hauling it to the bins either way, and he got weird about it while two other volunteers just watched, so now I'm stuck wondering if I handled it wrong. Should we be calling people out when we catch them leaving gear behind, or is it better to just bag it and keep the peace with a calm word?
That "coming back for it" line is such a classic. I read somewhere that most of the junk on beaches never gets claimed, people just say that when they get caught. You did the right thing hauling it out, tide doesn't care about his excuses.
