Why does everyone ignore monitor arm weight limits until disaster hits?
I helped my buddy set up his desk in Austin last month and he had this cheap 45 dollar monitor arm holding his 32 inch ultrawide. I told him to check the spec sheet because that thing is like 15 pounds with the stand removed. He waved me off saying it felt fine for two weeks. Then yesterday I get a text with a photo of his monitor face down on the desk and the gas spring snapped clean through the tilt joint. The manual literally said max 12 pounds and he never opened it. I get that nobody reads instructions but this is not a maybe situation, it bends your panel or cracks your desk if you are lucky. How many of you have actually weighed your monitor before mounting it or do we all just gamble and hope for the best?

Learned this the hard way with a 34 inch ultrawide on a $30 arm from Amazon. Spec said 17 pounds max and my monitor was 16.2 with the stand off, so I figured I was fine. Nope. The tilt mechanism slowly gave out over about three months until the thing was pointing at the floor no matter how hard I cranked it. Came home one day and the whole arm had sagged so bad the corner of the screen was resting on my speaker. The panel survived but the desk had a nice gouge in it. Now I put every monitor on a kitchen scale before it goes anywhere near an arm, takes ten seconds and saves you hundreds.
