The $15 thrift store lamp arm changed my whole desk setup

I spent like 6 months dealing with a cheap clamp-on lamp that kept drooping onto my keyboard. Then I found this old articulating drafting lamp at a Goodwill in Austin for 15 bucks. The arm has these threaded knobs that actually lock in place, not those plastic joints that slip after a week. I cleaned it up with some vinegar and it looks like it belongs in an architect's office now. The light spread is way more even too, no more harsh shadows on my mouse pad. Has anyone else had luck with old school drafting gear for their battlestation?

Those old drafting lamps have much better color rendering too, usually around 90+ CRI, which makes a huge difference for reading text or doing detail work without eye strain. The newer LED desk lamps tend to flicker at certain brightness levels and give me headaches after a few hours. I would keep an eye out for any drafting gear with a porcelain socket, the heat dissipation is far better than the plastic bases they sell now.

Picked up an old Huey drafting lamp at an estate sale for 12 bucks last year, and the tension joints on it are rock solid compared to anything new under 50.
