My $12 IKEA lamp arm collapsed at 2am and took my monitor with it
Last Thursday around 2am I was mid-raid when the cheap clamp on my desk lamp gave out and the whole arm swung down onto my second monitor. The screen cracked right at the corner and now there is a dead zone the size of a quarter. I zip tied the lamp to the shelf bracket behind the desk and it has held for four days so far, but I keep staring at that clamp like it owes me money. Anyone got a clamp setup that actually survives a desk bump without turning into a projectile?
That line about staring at the clamp like it owes you money got me, because I did the same thing for weeks after mine popped off. What finally worked was ditching the clamp and bolting a cheap shelf bracket to the wall behind my desk, then running the lamp arm through it with a steel u-bolt instead of zip ties. Zip ties stretch and snap over time, and metal hardware does not care how hard you bump the desk.
