Mounted my monitor on a $30 arm vs a $200 one and the difference was wild

I spent months using the cheap arm from Amazon and always thought my screen was just slightly off level. Turns out the gas spring in those cheap ones can't hold weight evenly past 6 months of use. I swapped to a proper gas spring arm from a brand at Micro Center for like $150 and my monitor sits perfectly still now. No more wobble when I type or bump the desk. The cheap one also started sagging on the left side even though I tightened the hex screws every week. Honestly the build quality on the nicer arm is just night and day - all metal parts instead of plastic joints. Has anyone else tried one of the mid-range arms and noticed a big difference from the budget ones?

Read a review that tested cheap gas springs with a pressure gauge and even new ones had wild inconsistency in how they held weight. That explained why my cheap arm always seemed to drift down overnight.

Man yeah that tracks hard with what I found. Cheap gas springs are basically a gamble on whether they'll hold up past the return window. I had one where the tension adjustment screw stripped out completely after like four months, just spinning forever with no effect. The real killer for me was the wobble though, I couldn't rest my arms on the desk while typing without the whole monitor shaking like a tuning fork. Went with a refurbished Ergotron from their outlet site for around a hundred bucks and it's been rock solid for two years now. The all metal construction and the gas spring that actually has a consistent pressure curve makes all the difference. You definitely don't need to spend two hundred but anything under fifty is just asking for trouble in my book.
