Learned a cable management trick from a guy at the local PC repair shop

I was at Computer Parts Plus on Elm Street last week picking up a new GPU, and the technician there showed me how to use adhesive cable clips for desk edges. He had this clean setup where every wire ran along the bottom of his desk, out of sight, using maybe 15 clips for $3 total. I tried it that night and it took me 20 minutes to fix my messy desk corner - has anyone else found a cheap hack that works this well?

My buddy tried this exact thing last month with his gaming setup. He went to Dollar Tree and grabbed a pack of those command strips with little cable holders. Thing is he got too excited and stuck like 20 of them all over his desk in like 5 minutes. His cables looked perfect for about a week until he tried to move his monitor and ripped three of them off the desk along with some paint. Now he has this patchy spot on his desk that looks worse than the cables ever did. He said he should have just used velcro straps like normal people.
