Hot take: a guy at the flea market in Tulsa told me the scratched PS1 discs are worth more than the clean ones
I was digging through a $2 bin at a flea market in Tulsa when a vendor saw me skip a copy of Tekken 3 because the disc looked like someone chewed it. He said scratched discs are less likely to be fakes or resurfaced junk, so cheap lots with visible wear are usually the real thing. I tested his claim with a $4 copy of Crash Bandicoot 2 that looked beat up, and it loaded on my first try while a shiny "like new" lot of 3 games off a guy in Dallas skipped on every one. So now I flip straight to the wrecked ones when I see a bin that smells like a garage. Has anyone else noticed worn discs holding up better than the mint looking ones?
Ever test a disc that looks like it went through a washing machine and it still spins fine? In my experience the beat up ones that still play are the ones that got played a lot back in the day, which means they were real and worked. Cheap resurfaced discs can look shiny but the grinding down thins the plastic, so they skip down the road. Your mileage may vary by seller, but I always check the back for a deep ring of swirl marks, that's the resurfacing tell. A few light scratches from normal use are nothing, take the gamble on those every time.
