Visited my aunt's place in Chicago last weekend and saw her balcony tomato setup

She's been growing on that same 4x6 balcony for over 20 years now. What got me was how simple she keeps it compared to all the fancy stuff I see online. Just 5 gallon buckets with holes drilled in the bottom, some old bamboo stakes, and a watering can she's had since the 90s. Her tomatoes looked BETTER than my ones in those expensive fabric pots with the self watering systems. Makes me wonder if we overthink this stuff too much. Has anyone else gone back to basics and seen better results?

Ha! That hits close to home. I spent like 80 bucks on those fancy fabric pots last spring and my plants looked like sad little sticks compared to the ones my neighbor grew in old kitty litter buckets. You're totally right that we overthink this. @grantl94 nailed it with the dollar store buckets idea, I'm switching to that setup next season for sure. My tomato plants are basically a monument to how much money I wasted trying to be fancy. Might have to go sneak some buckets from my aunt's garage before she notices. Does the bucket brand actually matter or is any cheap plastic okay?

Ditched my fancy pots for dollar store buckets and got the biggest harvest yet.
