Visited a community garden in Portland and saw something that got me thinking

I was at the Buckman community garden last weekend checking out their balcony box setup. They had these huge self watering containers that looked like a pain to move, but the tomatoes were massive compared to my sad little pots. On the other hand, my friend swears by plain old nursery pots because she says the fancy systems trap too much moisture and rot her roots. Anyone else notice a big difference between self watering planters and regular pots, or is it all just marketing hype?

But were the plants actually healthier or just bigger from the constant water access?

Wait, do I get a pass if my plants are both bigger AND I forget to water them for a week? Because that's basically my life. My succulents survived two months of neglect once and I called it 'hardening off through trauma.' Pretty sure they were just bigger from the water, not healthier, but hey, neither am I.
