Remember that freak hail storm in April that shredded my lettuce?
I was in Chicago, and my whole balcony setup got pounded for about ten minutes, turning my first real spring harvest into green confetti. It stung, but I just threw some old bed sheets over the remaining pots and the kale bounced back a week later. What's the weirdest weather your balcony garden has survived?

My basil survived a WILD dust storm last summer.

Is it just me or are plants getting way tougher these days?

Evan, my peace lily got hit with hail last spring and it bounced back like nothing happened. I have to agree with @evanr79 on this one. My grandmother's African violets from the 70s were delicate things that would drop dead if you looked at them wrong. Now my snake plant survived a week without water while I was out of town and didn't even droop. Either the plant breeders are doing something right or the climate is making them tougher.
