Question about watering frequency... am I the only one drowning my herbs?

I keep seeing posts where people water their balcony tomatoes every single day and I swear my mint nearly died from that schedule. I live in Phoenix and it's been 105F for two weeks straight, my basil actually does need water daily now but my rosemary is starting to droop from too much. How do you guys figure out the right rhythm? My finger in the soil trick never feels consistent.

Heard a gardener on some podcast say you gotta go by the plant's leaves not the clock and that stuck with me. Watch for wilting or yellowing and adjust from there, every climate is different.
