My cherry tomatoes went nuts after I put them in a 5 gallon bucket instead of those tiny pots
I used to grow everything in those flimsy 6 inch pots from the garden center. Kept wondering why my plants looked sad and barely gave me anything. Last spring I got tired of it and drilled some holes in a spare 5 gallon bucket I had from the hardware store. Filled it with potting mix and put one tomato plant in there. By August I had so many cherry tomatoes I was giving bags to neighbors. The bucket sits right on my balcony rail and takes up maybe 2 feet of floor space. Has anyone else tried bigger containers on a small balcony? I'm worried about weight but it's been fine so far.

Balcony weight's been fine for me too, even with heavy wet soil!

You mentioned going from tiny pots to a 5 gallon bucket and getting way more tomatoes, isn't that how most things go when you give them enough room to breathe? It's like the whole world is designed for starter sizes but nobody tells you the real growth happens when you move past the cramped beginning.
