My basil got fried by the afternoon sun last July

Had the pots on the west side of my balcony in Phoenix. Leaves turned white and crispy in two days. Moved everything to the north side and they bounced back. Anyone else deal with sunburn on herbs?

Actually my basil thrives in full sun, even in Texas heat lol.

Two days? Man, that's brutal. I left some pots on the south side of my apartment in July and the leaves literally curled up like little hands begging for mercy. @laura_ross is right about the afternoon heat being the killer. I moved my mint to the east side and it's fine, but the basil didn't make it. The white crispy thing you described is exactly what happened to mine - they looked like they got flash-fried. I'm not surprised they bounced back on the north side though, basil's tough when you give it half a chance.

Read somewhere that basil actually prefers morning sun. The afternoon heat just cooks it. North side sounds like the move for sure.
