My $40 self-watering pots almost killed my tomatoes

Bought these fancy self-watering pots from a garden center in Portland for $40 each. They were supposed to keep my balcony tomatoes happy while I went on vacation for a week. Came back and the reservoir had flooded the roots because I didn't realize the wicking system was jammed with dirt. Two out of three plants died, and now I'm back to regular pots with a timer on my hose. Has anyone else had bad luck with those self-watering planters?

Man, yeah @gavinhunt is right to feel bad about those tomatoes. A buddy of mine tried a similar setup for his peppers and came back to a swampy mess because the drainage holes clogged up on day two. He ended up just drilling extra holes in the bottom and using them as normal pots.

That is a real shame about your tomatoes.
