The $260 dehydrator that split the kitchen in two, team wet or team crispy?
I got a fancy Excalibur dehydrator last spring, mostly for fruit leathers and jerky, and it ran me $260 with tax. My roommate swears it's a miracle for making kale chips or drying herbs, but I think it's just an overpriced cabinet warmer that takes 9 hours to do what a $30 oven rack can handle faster. She did a batch of strawberries that came out like shoe leather for gumming, then a batch of tomatoes that she said were perfect for pasta, but they vanished in a day so who knows. Meanwhile I tried making apple rings and they were still mushy in the middle after 11 hours, so I tossed the whole tray in the trash out of frustration. The real debate is whether the drying time is worth the texture, or if you're just paying for the idea of healthy snacks. Our last argument ended with her calling my oven-dried batch "sad and shriveled" and me calling her machine a "slow crime against fruit." Has anyone else dropped serious cash on a dehydrator and come out either loving it or wanting to throw it out a window, or is this just a me problem with expectations?
