I finally chose between butter and shortening for pie crust

My grandma always used shortening but my friend swears by butter. I made two pies side by side last Thanksgiving to settle it once and for all. The butter one tasted way better but the shortening one held its shape perfectly after 2 hours on the counter. Now I do half and half and honestly it's the best of both worlds. Has anyone else had to play referee between two family recipes like that?

My aunt used to swear by lard for everything. Made a mean tamale with it. She switched to shortening when my uncle got his cholesterol checked.

Oh man, half and half is the only real answer. I had the exact same fight with my sister over holiday cookies. Butter gives you that flaky taste but shortening just holds up better when you're not eating them right away. I ended up doing 60/40 butter to shortening and nobody complained once. It's not cheating, it's compromise.
