Bought a $22 oven thermometer after 3 years of burning every cookie, and my oven was off by 45 degrees
I finally got tired of pulling trays of cookies out of the oven with black bottoms and raw middles. My wife kept saying it was my recipe, so I messed with flour amounts and chill times for months with no luck. Last month I grabbed a cheap oven thermometer at a kitchen store in Sacramento for $22 and hung it on the middle rack. Set my oven to 350 and the thing read 395 after it warmed up. So every batch I ever made was baking way too hot. I turned the dial down until the thermometer hit 350 and made a batch of chocolate chip cookies that came out even for the first time ever. My wife admitted it was not the recipe. Now I want to know if anyone else found their oven was lying to them, and did you pay someone to fix it or just learn the offset?
