The $9 garage sale VCR that ruined my Sharknado marathon plan

Picked up a dusty VCR from a yard sale on 5th street for $9 last Saturday, figured it would be perfect for watching an old copy of Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus. Got three minutes in and the tape started making this grinding noise, then it just spat the whole thing out and ate half the reel. Do you guys ever try to salvage a broken viewing setup or just call it and switch to streaming?
