Started tracking which bad movies my group actually finishes vs which ones we turn off, and the results were not what I expected
My movie group started keeping a notebook back in January where we write down every bad movie we watch and whether we made it to the end or tapped out. Over 40 movies in, the pattern is weird: the ones critics hated the most, like Birdemic and The Room, we finish almost every time because there is always something happening to laugh at. The ones that kill us are the boring bad movies, stuff like a 2015 shark movie we picked up at a flea market for $3 that had maybe 20 minutes of actual shark footage. The difference was obvious after about 3 weeks, our finish rate for so bad its fun movies sits around 90% but for dull bad movies it drops to like 30%. Turns out the sweet spot is a movie that is trying really hard and failing, not one that just gave up. What is your groups cutoff rule for tapping out, 30 minutes or do you tough it out to the end?
Ever notice how this is basically the same rule as bad restaurants and bad jobs? We'll sit through a total mess as long as something is happening, but boring ones make us check out way sooner, and our group taps out at about 30 minutes unless the riffing gets good.
