Unpopular opinion: I spent a whole summer squinting at the moon and ruined my own sky vision
I used to drag my little 4 inch dob out to the driveway in Riverside every chance I got, and I would stare at the moon first thing because it was easy to find and bright. Took me a while to admit why everything else looked so dim after that. My eyes were toast for a good 20 minutes each time, and I kept blaming the streetlight across the way or hazy air or my cheap eyepieces. Then about 6 months ago a guy at a star party in San Bernardino pointed out I was going moon first and killing my night vision for the rest of the session. He said give it 20 minutes in the dark before you touch the bright stuff, and save the moon for the end. Now I start with the dim fuzzies while my eyes adjust, and the moon is the last thing I look at before I pack it in. Turns out my gear was fine the whole time. So what's your order of operations out there, moon first or save it for the walk back to the porch?
