Tried holding my phone up to the eyepiece to snap the moon, got way more than I expected
I know everyone says phone pics through a telescope are a waste of time but last Friday I was out back in Tucson with my little 70mm refractor and figured why not. I just held my phone right up against the 25mm eyepiece with no adapter, shaky hands and all, expecting a blurry white blob. What came out was actually a shot where you can see the line of craters along the terminator, and even a little bit of that gray shading on the dark side. I probably took 40 shots and only 3 were worth keeping, so it was mostly luck and steady breathing. What surprised me is that tapping the screen to focus on the bright edge instead of the middle made the biggest difference, way more than any settings change. I'm not saying it beats a real camera, but for a free trick with stuff I already owned, it got me weirdly excited. Has anyone else messed around with hand-holding a phone up to the eyepiece, and did you find a trick that made more shots come out sharp?
