TIL the guy running the star party at Joshua Tree was right about ditching my phone app
I spent 2 hours at the Joshua Tree star party last month fighting my sky app's red screen instead of just looking up, and the older guy next to me with a $20 planisphere and a red flashlight saw three things I completely missed, so now I leave the phone in the car, and I'm wondering if anyone else here went back to paper charts too?
Laughing at the mental image of you hunched over a glowing red phone like you're defusing a bomb while some old guy with a planisphere is out there actually seeing the sky. Two hours of swiping and squinting at a screen that ruins your night vision, and the guy with a twenty dollar piece of cardboard wins. There's a lesson in there somewhere but I'm too busy being annoyed on your behalf to figure it out. Glad you wised up though, the stars aren't going anywhere but your phone battery sure is.
