Thought star charts were pointless since phone apps exist, then a power outage in my neighborhood changed my mind
I always figured paper star charts were for old school folks who didn't want to mess with screens. Why squint at a spinning cardboard wheel when my phone can show me Jupiter in 3 seconds? So when my neighbor Dale handed me an old planisphere from the 80s, I thanked him and tossed it in a drawer. Then last Tuesday a transformer blew about four blocks from my house in Bakersfield and we sat in the dark for almost 6 hours. No wifi, phone at 14 percent, nothing to do. I dug out that planisphere, went out back, and honestly it was kind of a blast. You spin the wheel to match the date and time, and there's the whole sky laid out in front of you. I located Vega and the Summer Triangle in under a minute without a single notification popping up. Now I keep it by the back door and my phone stays in my pocket half the time. Has anyone else gone back to paper charts after years of apps, or am I just late to the party?
