Spent $40 on a 'moon filter' that turned out to be a piece of green plastic
I bought this thing online after reading it would help me see more detail on the moon. It arrived last week and I was so excited to try it. I screwed it onto my telescope and the moon just looked like a dim, green blob, no detail at all. I could have just held a piece of tinted plastic from a toy package over the lens for free. Has anyone found a real moon filter that actually works?

Sounds like you got the budget version for looking at cheese... a green filter would make sense for that. The good ones are usually neutral density, not a piece of party plastic. Maybe try a camera lens filter from a real brand instead.

Read a camera magazine piece about how cheap filters can mess with color balance. They said the coating matters more than the color for cutting glare. Some of those green ones actually add a weird tint to everything you see.

Budget version for looking at cheese" made me laugh, but honestly mine works fine.
