Skipped the phone app and went with a paper star chart from Half Price Books, and I don't regret it
I was stuck choosing between a $3 sky app subscription and a $6 used planisphere I found in the clearance bin at the Half Price Books on Northwest Highway. I went with the paper wheel, mostly because my phone screen kills my night vision out in the driveway. Three months in and I can actually find the Summer Triangle and Cassiopeia without staring at a glowing rectangle. The app crowd keeps telling me I'm missing out on alerts, but I like learning the sky the slow way. Does anyone here still use a paper chart, or am I the last one?
I read somewhere that planispheres get updated every decade or so since the stars drift slowly, so a used one from the 90s might be a little off. Mine is from 2004 and the Big Dipper still lines up fine, so you're not alone out there.
