My old binoculars broke and I had to pick between a new pair or a small telescope.
I went with a 70mm refractor from a local shop in Boise for $150, but the setup feels a bit shaky on my patio table. How do you keep a small scope steady without buying a big tripod?

Have you tried putting something heavy on the lower part of the tripod, like hanging a bag with a rock or a water bottle? That can really help keep it from shaking. Also, check if the legs are actually fully spread apart and locked in place. Sometimes you have to fiddle with the little tightening knobs to make sure they are snug. A patio table is usually flat enough, but you might need to put a folded napkin or a little piece of rubber under one foot if the surface is uneven. I've had good luck just setting the whole thing on a concrete slab if you have one, that stays way more still than a wooden table. Small tweaks like that can make a big difference without spending more money on a big tripod.
