Hot take: I logged 47 backyard sessions in 90 days and only 9 were worth it, here's the trap I fell into
I started keeping a log back in April and hit 47 nights with the scope by the end of June. Only 9 of those gave me a view I would call sharp, and the rest were me fighting haze, porch lights, and my own bad habit of setting up too late. The number that really got me was 31: that is how many times I dragged everything out after the sky had already gone soupy, just because I felt like I had to use the gear. I live near Columbus and the west side of my street has three new LED floods that came on in May, which wrecked the two spots I used for years. One night I checked my log and saw I had spent more time hauling the tripod than actually looking up, so I started checking a clear sky site before I touch a single case. If you log your sessions, what is the one number in your notes that made you change how you do this?
Man, that 31 hits close to home. Mine was 11 clear nights in a row last fall where I set up anyway and got nothing but moon glare and jet trails, all because the gear was already in the car. Now I pull up the clear sky chart first and if it looks bad I just don't go, even if the scope is begging me from the closet. Sorry about those LED floods too, losing a spot you used for years stings.
