Cheap planisphere beat my $40 app for finding Andromeda
Two months ago I could not find Andromeda to save my life. I tried a star app on my phone first, and every time I looked up the screen killed my night vision and I lost the spot in about 10 seconds. Then my neighbor handed me a paper planisphere he got for $12 at a museum shop in Denver, and I found the galaxy on my second try, no phone needed. The paper one let me keep both eyes adjusted and I could match the sky to the wheel instead of squinting at a glowing rectangle. Last week I showed my kid the Pleiades in under a minute with it. If you are still waving a phone around in the dark, try a planisphere for one clear night and tell me if you go back.
