Bought a $30 red flashlight off Amazon and it changed my whole setup

I was using a regular headlamp for months and kept ruining my night vision every time I looked down at my star chart. The red light mode on this cheap one from a brand called Vekkia actually works great and doesn't blind me. Has anyone else had a good experience with a specific red light or did I just get lucky on my first try?

Wait, is the red actually bright enough to read charts by? I got a cheap one and it's barely visible past ten feet.

OH, tell me about it. I bought one of those cheap red lights from a camping store once and it was basically just a dim glow, like a dying firefly. My husband called it "mood lighting for a vampire" and I couldn't even see my own shoelaces to tie them. Lesson learned, you REALLY do have to shell out for a decent one if you want to see anything beyond your own nose.
