Tried using a regular garden hose to fill the waterer vs. the $15 poultry waterer base from Tractor Supply.

I went through that same mess last summer. The hose was always too much pressure and made a huge muddy spot. I ended up getting a cheap plastic barrel with a float valve, and it fills itself from the rain now. It was a bit of work to set up, but it solved the problem for good.
