Tried hanging a cabbage in my run and the girls ignored it for 2 weeks
I read on some forum that hanging a whole green cabbage from a string keeps hens busy and stops feather pecking, so I strung one up in the run on a Sunday. For 14 days my 6 hens walked right past it like it was a weird green rock. Then my neighbor Deb in Reno told me to cut it in half first so they can see the inside, and they destroyed it in about 20 minutes. Turns out they need to see something worth pecking at, not just a smooth ball. Has anyone else had a treat totally flop until you changed one small thing?
Cutting it in half is a solid first step but you can take it way further by scoring the cut face into a grid or crisscross pattern so there are little bits sticking up for them to grab. That trick works on basically any hanging veg, like a whole pumpkin or a melon, and it turns a 20 minute toy into a 2 day project. Deb basically saved your run from becoming a chicken version of a decorative fruit bowl.
