The county fair judge's feather comment changed my whole approach
Last year at the Des Moines County Fair, a judge told me my buff Orpington's feathers were too ragged and asked if I'd been adding oyster shell to the feed. I hadn't, and after adding a small bowl mixed into their scratch for about 6 weeks, the next molt came in so much smoother and shinier. Has anyone else noticed a real difference from oyster shell beyond just eggshell strength?

Honestly I gotta call BS on this one. Oyster shell is for calcium and egg production, it ain't gonna change feather texture one bit. You probably just had a better molt cycle or changed something else in the feed without noticing. Judges say all kinds of stuff that sounds smart but doesn't hold up. Placebo effect is real, even for chickens.
