That $25 roll of hardware cloth saved my whole flock from a raccoon last Tuesday

I thought my coop was secure but a raccoon found a gap near the roof vent I hadn't even noticed. The hardware cloth I stapled over it was only 1/4 inch mesh but it held tight while the raccoon tore at it for like an hour. Cost me about 25 bucks for a 50 foot roll and it probably saved me from losing my 6 hens. Has anyone else had a predator test their coop like that and find a weak spot you didn't know about?

Five bucks says half of us have at least one weak spot we just haven't caught yet. Thats just how life works, you only really know if something is solid after it gets tested hard. Same reason I double check my car's tire pressure before a long drive instead of just waiting for a flat.

You're acting like checking your tire pressure is some kind of life philosophy, man, it's just air.

My neighbor's coop got hit last spring. I went overboard after that - screwed hardware cloth into every seam and added latches that lock with carabiners. Seems silly until you hear a racket at 3am.
