That $120 heat lamp setup nearly cooked my whole flock
Bought a fancy brooder plate with a thermostat last March after seeing it advertised everywhere. Worked fine for about two weeks, then the sensor glitched and it ran full blast all night. Woke up to chicks panting and the bedding steaming, not one casualty but it scared me straight. Has anyone else ditched electric heat for a simple ceramic bulb after a close call like that?
Yikes, a thermostat failing in the middle of the night is my worst fear with those things, at least a plain bulb just does one thing and you know what you're getting. You could even hang the bulb higher and lower it as they grow so they can always move away from it if they get too hot.
