Switched my hens to fermented feed last October and got a weird surprise with the eggs
Back in October I started fermenting my layer mash in a 5 gallon bucket after reading about it here, mostly to save a few bucks on feed. Figured I'd get cheaper eggs out of it, but around week 3 the shells got noticeably harder and my two older girls started laying again after a slow fall. Honestly the bucket smells like sour beer and my wife hates it sitting by the coop, but I'm not going back. Now I'm wondering if it's the feed itself or just that they drink more water with wet mash, has anyone else seen the shell thing?
