Shoutout to the old timer who told me to switch from a single heat lamp to a brooder plate

Lost two chicks to cold spots in my Ohio garage last spring with just the lamp. Got a $65 brooder plate this year and the whole batch stayed even and calm. Anyone else find a simple gear swap made a huge difference in survival rates?

Isn't it amazing how one piece of advice can change everything? I had the exact same thing happen years ago, lost a few before a neighbor set me straight. The plates just give such a steady warmth, no scary bright light either. My birds always seem so much more settled under a plate. It really is a game changer for keeping them healthy.

That steady warmth really does make all the difference.

My cousin's parrot got super stressed during a move last year, like plucking its own feathers stressed. They tried a regular heat lamp but the flicker made it worse. Switched to a ceramic heat emitter on a thermostat, set to 80 degrees, and within a week it was like a different bird. The constant gentle heat just calmed it right down. It's wild how sensitive they are to that stuff.
