Rant: I ditched pine shavings for sand in my coop and now I can't decide if I was right

Swapped the 4 inch pine shaving layer in my 6x8 coop for washed construction sand back in March, and the poop scooping got way faster but the dust in the summer has me second guessing it. Half the folks I know swear sand is the only way and the other half say shavings break down better in the compost, so what are you all actually running?
