Rant: deep litter vs weekly cleanout, I chose wrong

After my first 8 birds in Ohio, I went all in on deep litter because everyone swore it was less work. Six months later I was shoveling a soaked, ammonia smelling mess that took me a whole Saturday to haul out in 4 wheelbarrow loads. Switched to a weekly cleanout with pine shavings and a $12 sifting scoop from Tractor Supply, and my coop in Columbus smells fine now. Has anyone else tried deep litter in a humid area and had it fail this bad?
