Rant: a feed store guy in Tulsa told me hens lay fewer eggs at 1 year old, not more
I always figured older hens laid better, but he said peak production is around 18 months and it drops off after that, which is why so many people cull at 2 years. Anyone else track their flock's egg count by age, or am I the only one who never thought about this?
Learned that the hard way too, and it stung because I spent years thinking my old girls were still pulling their weight. Tracked mine for a couple seasons and sure enough, the two year olds dropped off a cliff compared to the pullets. Nobody warns you, they just sell you chicks and let you figure it out when the egg basket comes up light. Hang in there, at least now you know it was never something you did wrong with their feed or care.
