PSA: My view on chicken feed completely flipped after a vet visit
Three years ago in my old Raleigh yard, I was just grabbing whatever 50lb layer bag was cheapest. Last month, our vet pointed out how dull my hen's feathers were and suggested a specific brand with more protein. After switching, the difference in their energy and eggshell strength in just the last week has been HUGE. Anyone have a good alternative to Purina's Flock Raiser that won't break the bank?

I mean, maybe try mixing in some black soldier fly larvae?

lilychen said "try mixing in some black soldier fly larvae" and honestly my first thought was "great now my chickens are gonna have better eating habits than me." I've been on that cheap feed life for a while too and honestly the larvae thing actually works. My girls went nuts for them and it broke up the monotony of the same crumbles every day. Plus it's way cheaper than the fancy organic stuff I keep eyeing at the store.
