Overheard my neighbor saying she feeds her chickens expired yogurt

Was out back last weekend and heard my neighbor telling someone she gives her hens yogurt that's past the sell by date. Said they go crazy for it and she's done it for years with no issues. I always thought dairy was risky for chickens but now I'm wondering if I'm being too careful. Has anyone else tried feeding their flock stuff like that?

My buddy down the road tried this once. He gave his hens some plain yogurt that was a few days past the date, not anything with fruit or sugar in it. The chickens went absolutely nuts for it, pecking at the bowl like it was the best thing ever. They were fine, no weird droppings or anything, and he said their egg shells actually seemed harder for a bit after. He's not a big risk taker with his birds though, so he only does it like once a month now as a treat. I'm still too nervous to try it myself, but his story makes me think it's probably not as dangerous as everyone says.

I totally get being nervous about it, I'm the same way with my flock. Your buddy's experience is reassuring though, makes me wonder if I'm overthinking it.
