My vet said to quit the deep litter and just scrub the waterer, and my flock stopped getting sick
I was complaining to my vet in Amarillo last week about two hens with crusty nostrils and he cut me off and asked how often I scrub the waterer. I said every Sunday, and he said that was the problem, because a scummy waterer grows film faster than a coop floor ever will. He told me to dump, scrub with a brush, and refill every single day, not top it off, and his reasoning was simple, chickens drink way more than people think and a dirty waterer is the fastest way to spread stuff bird to bird. Six days in, both hens look clear and the whole flock is drinking more than I ever saw with the weekly change. Deep litter stays, but the water gets scrubbed daily now, and I feel a little dumb for six years of Sundays. Curious how often the rest of you actually scrub yours, because I suspect I'm not the only lazy one here.
