My uncle told me to skip the hardware cloth for my coop and just use chicken wire
He said it was cheaper and worked fine for his birds in Ohio. A raccoon tore right through the chicken wire last Thursday and got two of my Buff Orpingtons. I'm rebuilding the run now with 1/2 inch hardware cloth. Anyone have a good source for it that won't break the bank?

Look, I get it. Hardware cloth is expensive. My cousin in Michigan used chicken wire for years with no problems. It depends on your area. If you don't have a big predator problem, maybe you just got unlucky with one smart raccoon. Reinforcing just the bottom few feet might be enough instead of redoing the whole thing.

Hardware cloth is the only way to go for real protection. Chicken wire is just for keeping chickens in, not predators out. Sorry about your birds, that really sucks.

It's that "depends on your area" line that gets me. You see this everywhere, people skipping the right tool because someone else got lucky. It's like not wearing a seatbelt because your neighbor never crashed. The one time you need it, you really need it. Paying for hardware cloth now is cheaper than replacing chickens later.
