My neighbor's dog got into the run and I had to chase it out with a broom

Last Tuesday afternoon, I was inside when I heard the hens squawking like crazy. I ran out back and saw a big golden retriever from two houses down digging at the fence line. It had pushed a weak spot in the wire and was trying to get at the girls. Honestly, I just grabbed the nearest thing, which was a push broom, and waved it while yelling until the dog ran off. The chickens were fine but super spooked. Has anyone else had to dog-proof their run in a way that actually holds up?

Ever try to chase off a goat? Makes a dog look easy. We had one that would headbutt the coop door for fun, bent the latch right out. Your hardware cloth idea, @phoenixgonzalez, made me remember we ended up wrapping the whole bottom section in chain link like a skirt. That broom is a classic move though, my go-to for scattering possums from the compost.

Honestly, that broom trick works on more than dogs (I once used a mop on a raccoon). For the fence, I ended up burying a foot of hardware cloth around the whole run.

That mop trick would probably fail on my cat, but then again everything fails on my cat.
