My neighbor said put golf balls in the nest box, and my hens stopped eating eggs
My neighbor Dale has kept hens in his backyard over on Sherman Street for about 15 years, and when I complained that two of my five girls were breaking and eating their own eggs, he said to drop a few golf balls in the nest box. I was skeptical since it sounded like an old wives' tale, but I put three cheap balls in there on a Tuesday and within a week the egg eating stopped. Turns out the hens peck at the balls, get nothing, and give up on the habit before they ever crack a real one. Has anyone else tried this, or did you use wooden eggs or something else that worked better?

Golf balls worked for me too but it took closer to two weeks before I saw a real change. I had one barred rock who was the ringleader and she was stubborn as heck about it. What really sealed it for me was making sure the fake eggs stayed in the box all the time, not just when I remembered, because if they come back and the ball is gone they go right back to the real thing. I also started picking eggs twice a day so there was less chance of one getting cracked in the first place, and that helped a ton. Wooden eggs are fine too but honestly the golf balls are cheaper and the hens don't seem to care one bit about the difference. Dale knows what he's talking about.
