I finally stopped using pine shavings and switched to straw, wish I did it sooner
Last spring I had a dust problem in the run so bad my neighbor thought I was smoking something. I was hauling bags of pine shavings from Tractor Supply every 10 days, that's like $18 a trip, and the girls were sneezing nonstop. Finally tried a bale of wheat straw from a local farm for $7 and it lasts me 3 weeks. Less dust, easier to rake out, and they scratch through it like it's a treasure hunt. The only catch is it mats down if you don't fluff it weekly, but honestly that's 5 minutes with a pitchfork. Anyone else made the switch and dealt with the matting differently? I'm trying to figure out if I should layer sand underneath or just keep flipping it more often.

Switched to straw last fall for my ducks and yeah the matting drove me nuts until I started tossing a handful of scratch grains in there every few days. They tear it apart hunting for the grain and it fluffs itself basically for free. Sand under it sounds like a headache to clean later honestly.
