Free-range vs fenced run: my neighbor's 40-minute lecture changed how I see it
Ran into a retired guy at the feed store in Boise who kept 12 hens for 15 years. He told me free-range birds are happier but basically sign a death warrant with hawks and cars. He lost 6 birds in one summer before he built a 50-foot run with netting overhead. I've been letting mine roam my half-acre and lost 2 last month to a red-tailed hawk. Now I'm torn between giving them space and keeping them alive. Is a fenced run really the only sane option, or does anyone else manage predators with other tricks?

Well, that old timer clearly learned the hard way, so maybe think of that run as their safe room instead of a jail.
