Diatomaceous earth made my dust bath situation 10x worse
I read about adding diatomaceous earth to the coop run to battle mites, so I sprinkled a good layer under the roost and in their dust bath spot last weekend. Within two days my 5 hens looked like they rolled in flour and the dust was so fine it hung in the air every time they scratched. My rooster started sneezing nonstop and one hen got red, irritated eyes, so I pulled it all out and replaced it with plain sand and wood ash. Turns out DE works better as a targeted powder on the birds themselves, not as a whole floor treatment, especially if your run is enclosed like mine in Ohio. I also learned fine dust is brutal on chicken respiratory systems, way more than I expected. Anyone else tried DE as a coop amendment and ended up regretting it, or did I just overdo the amount?
