A chat with my vet about chicken dust baths made me change my whole setup
She asked what I used for the dust bath area, and when I said 'just some dry dirt from the garden,' she pointed out that soil can carry parasites and cocci spores. I switched to a 50/50 mix of play sand and diatomaceous earth in a concrete mixing tub. What's your go-to dust bath recipe to keep things safe?

But isn't a bit of garden dirt just letting their immune systems work?

The DE in that mix can actually be rough on chicken lungs if it's too fine. Food grade is a bit safer, but even then it's dusty. I just use construction sand and add a little wood ash sometimes.
