Update: my route plan for the Wind River Range fell apart at the Dutch Joe trailhead and I got skunked on permits
So I mapped out a 38 mile loop through the Wind Rivers for months, and when I walked up to the trailhead last Friday the ranger told me my permit window closed a day early because of a date mix-up. I stood there with my pack on and had to pick a whole new route on the spot with no map of the southern section. Ended up doing an out and back on the same 9 miles twice and saw the same three lakes both ways. Does anyone keep a backup route printed out for stuff like this, and if so how do you pick one that actually works with your car spot?
Waited, your permit window closed a DAY early?? That would break my brain after months of planning. I can't get over that you had to stand there at the trailhead with your pack on and just wing it with no map of the south section. Nine miles out and back twice means you literally saw the same three lakes on the way in AND the way out, that's brutal. I keep a paper backup route in my glove box for exactly this kind of mess but honestly I never thought about how the car spot works with it. How did you even get back to your car at the end of all that?
